Watch: Inequalities and political life with Councillor Anna Rothery


Councillor Anna Rothery is well known and highly regarded politician. She has represented the Princes Park ward since 2006 and during this time she supported the Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community and became involved in activities including Operation Black Vote, a scheme to get more people with the BAME background into politics.

In September 2019, Anna became the first black Lord Mayor in the history of the city of Liverpool after her predecessor resigned. During her term as Lord Mayor, Anna has fundraised for local charities, including Anthony Walker Foundation, Liverpool City Region Pride Foundation and Merseyside Somali Association.

In this interview, which coincides with Black History Month, Anna reflects on her political life, her experience of politics as a black woman and what needs to be done to tackle the inequalities that are still present today.
